Chapter 199: Sam....
Chapter 199: Sam....
Every minute, every second felt like an eternity.
Five minutes passed.
The massive, 100-meter ice sculpture of Mega Rayquaza and Sam remained completely motionless, frozen in place upon the ruined earth.
"ROOOAAAR..."
Black Kyurem's continuous, deranged low growls sent waves of bone-chilling cold across the landscape.
The endless cold wave seemed to extinguish the very hope in people's hearts.
Ten kilometers away, the evacuated personnel and citizens watched the battlefield through monitors.
Every face was deathly pale.
"Sam..."
Tears of absolute despair fell from Cynthia's eyes. At this moment, her heart turned to ashes. It felt as if a blunt, rusted knife had gouged out her soul.
She stared at the frozen monolith, her legs giving out.
"Cynthia..."
Diantha caught her, wrapping her arms around her best friend empathetically. She held the weak, trembling Sinnoh Champion tightly.
Seeing Sam and Rayquaza frozen like that, Diantha felt the color drain from the world. A great hero had fallen, leaving everything gray and hopeless.
"Sigh..." Caitlin of the Unova Elite Four exhaled heavily.
"If even Professor Samuel and Mega Rayquaza aren't a match for Black Kyurem... who is?"
The rest of the Unova Elite Four looked entirely dejected. They were the finest trainers in the region, but facing a crazed, life-burning God, they were powerless.
Just as Cynthia wept and the Elite Four succumbed to despair, a figure stepped forward.
Sabrina pulled a Poké Ball from her waist and unleashed her Ace.
"Alakazam! Mega Evolve!"
Bright light flared. Alakazam instantly transformed into its Mega Evolution.
Sabrina's sudden action immediately attracted everyone's attention.
"Miss Sabrina, what are you doing?!" Shauntal, the Ghost-type Elite Four member, asked in a panic.
Sabrina didn't even glance at Shauntal. She kept her cold eyes fixed on the growling Black Kyurem in the distance.
With no expression on her face, she spoke in an unusually firm tone:
"For Sam."
Everyone was shocked.
If Mega Rayquaza, a being vastly stronger than any of them, was frozen solid, what could Sabrina do?
She was a Regional Champion, yes, but her Alakazam was just a normal Pokémon. To fight against a berserk God... wasn't that just throwing her life away?
"Miss Sabrina! Don't be impulsive!" Shauntal pleaded.
"Maybe we still have a way!"
As everyone tried to talk Sabrina down, a sudden, violent surge of Dragon Aura erupted.
Cynthia broke free from Diantha's embrace.
She wiped her tears, her face deathly pale, but her eyes burning with an unquenchable, hateful fire. She threw her Poké Ball.
"Garchomp! Mega Evolve!"
"ROOOAAAR!!!"
Garchomp roared, immediately entering its Mega Evolved form, its scythes gleaming dangerously.
The crowd looked at Cynthia in horror. Her beautiful eyes were no longer weeping; they were dancing with flames of pure hatred aimed at Black Kyurem.
"Miss Cynthia!!"
"Cynthia! Calm down!!"
"Black Kyurem is not something we can handle! It's suicide!"
Marshal and Caitlin rushed forward, trying to block her path. Caitlin looked back desperately.
"Diantha, please! Persuade them!"
As Cynthia's closest friend, Diantha understood her current mood better than anyone. Cynthia's heart was dead.
She was going to avenge her fiancé, even if it cost her life. How could Diantha possibly advise her to stop?
"Sigh..."
Diantha let out a heavy sigh. Sam was a great man, a beacon of light for all of them. Seeing him fall cast a shadow over her heart as well.
Diantha unclipped her own Poké Ball.
"Gardevoir. Mega Evolve!"
"Sana~!!"
In a flash of brilliant white light, Mega Gardevoir appeared in her regal dress. Diantha stepped up beside Cynthia.
If her best friend were going to war against a God, she wouldn't let her go alone.
Sabrina, Cynthia, and Diantha looked at each other.
No words were exchanged, but their attitudes were clear. To avenge Sam, they would face down a God.
At this moment, an unspoken truce formed between them. Cynthia's hostility toward Sabrina vanished, replaced by a mutual, grim understanding.
Sabrina, still expressionless, felt a strange sense of camaraderie.
Diantha smiled gracefully, though her eyes were sad.
"Let's go."
Cynthia and Sabrina nodded simultaneously.
Just as the three women were about to launch a suicidal charge against Black Kyurem, Alder, who had been staring silently at the sky, suddenly roared.
"STOP!!"
His booming voice echoed across the frozen wasteland.
Alder pointed a weathered finger at the sky.
"Look up! The sky hasn't fallen! That means Rayquaza, the Lord of the Sky, is not dead! And if Rayquaza isn't dead, then its master isn't dead!"
"Sam will be fine!!"
Cynthia froze, her heart skipping a beat.
"What do you mean? Explain clearly!" she demanded, ignoring all etiquette.
Diantha and Sabrina also turned to stare at Alder's aged face. A glimmer of desperate expectation returned to their eyes.
Alder's raw strength might not have been the absolute highest among the Regional Champions, but he possessed one thing the others did not: Age and Experience.
He had been the Champion of Unova for decades. His knowledge of myths, legends, and world history was deeper and broader than anyone else present.
Alder looked at the three trembling women and spoke slowly, his voice carrying the weight of ancient lore.
"Think about the geography of our world," Alder began.
"The Johto Region has Mt. Silver. The Kanto Region has Mt. Moon. The Sinnoh Region has Mt. Coronet. Unova has Twist Mountain, and Kalos has its own towering ranges."
"These mountains are massive. They reach thousands of meters high, piercing the cloud layer and touching the heavens."
Alder narrowed his eyes, looking toward the frozen monolith in the distance.
"But have you ever thought about the Hoenn Region? The land where Rayquaza is famous?"
"Even Mt. Chimney, the great volcano where the God of the Earth, Groudon, slumbers... why is it so short? Why is it less than a thousand meters high? Why are there no mountains in Hoenn that pierce the sky?"
