Chapter 385 - 159: Assassination, Improvement (3)
Ouyang Sword and Xu Qian hadn’t disturbed Shen Bai for the past few days. Instead, they’d been hanging out together and seemed to have really hit it off.
Noticing Shen Bai’s arrival, Ouyang Sword and Xu Qian walked over and cupped their fists in greeting.
"Brother Shen, we’ll probably have to part ways after today."
Shen Bai asked in confusion, "Brother Xu is returning to his city, but aren’t you coming back with me, Brother Ouyang?"
They had traveled together on the way here, so it was only natural they would do the same on the way back.
But to his surprise, Ouyang Sword shook his head. "I’m not going back for now. I have to pay a visit to my grand-master."
The grand-master was, of course, Elder Mu’s teacher—the powerful individual who served as a Landlord in a Capital City.
Shen Bai nodded. "Alright. I’ll just head back by myself then."
He didn’t ask why. It was none of his business.
Everyone has their secrets. Prying too much would do more harm than good.
As they were talking, Shen Bai heard footsteps. He turned to see Lv Bei and his two companions approaching, their faces etched with embarrassment.
Before Shen Bai could say anything, Lv Bei and the other two exchanged a glance, cupped their fists, and spoke.
"Lord Shen, we were quite presumptuous earlier. We hope you can forgive us. It was the internal assessment, after all, so we resorted to some unsavory tactics."
Shen Bai shook his head. "Lord Feng has already said that in the internal assessment, the ends justify the means. We were only temporary enemies. There’s no need to be so guarded."
Lv Bei nodded. "Lord Shen, you are magnanimous. It makes the three of us seem rather petty. Since you don’t hold it against us, we can rest a little easier."
Lv Bei and his companions had come to terms with it recently.
It was perfectly normal that they were no match for him. Among the current younger generation, how many could possibly be his opponent? Defeating Shen Bai was simply impossible.
This was especially true given Shen Bai’s performance in the assessment. Forget the younger generation; even their seniors from the middle-aged generation would likely feel a chill in their hearts.
The three of them had come to apologize because what they did during the assessment was, frankly, out of line.
Never mind the talk about "any means necessary"; their actions were genuinely infuriating.
It was only because of Lord Shen’s magnanimity that he didn’t hold it against them.
Of course, there was a reason for his thinking.
’It’s easy for a person to realize their mistakes,’ Shen Bai thought, ’but actually correcting them is much harder.’
’The fact that these three could swallow their pride and come forward to explain themselves was already a rare and commendable act.’
’They dared to take responsibility, at least. That made them stand-up guys. There was nothing to forgive or not forgive.’
’Men were just that simple sometimes.’
After hearing Shen Bai’s response, Lv Bei didn’t disturb the group any further, and he and his companions departed.
After they left, Feng Zheng walked in from outside, holding a scroll.
Behind him, several members of the Observatory were carrying an enormous chest inside.
When Feng Zheng appeared, all eyes turned to him.
All eyes turned to him, but especially to the enormous chest, which made everyone’s eyes light up with excitement.
Even those who didn’t rank in the top half would receive resources like Weapons and Elixirs, which was an excellent outcome for them.
A serious expression appeared on Feng Zheng’s face. He then opened the Scroll in his hand and began to read. "This internal assessment has come to a successful conclusion. Your performances have been exemplary. We will now confer rewards based on merit."
"I will call out a name. That person will come forward to receive their reward."
Feng Zheng kept his explanation of the simple procedure just as simple.
After he finished speaking, he began calling out names.
There were many members from the internal assessment, but the chest wasn’t particularly large.
Yet, for every member who came forward, an endless stream of items was produced from within.
Shen Bai saw at a glance what made it special.
’It’s a Space Type item.’
’Looks like the Yunxi State Observatory is quite wealthy,’ Shen Bai thought. ’As the largest of all the State-level Cities, it’s not surprising they’d have something like this.’
As Feng Zheng continued to call out names, more and more members of the Observatory went up to claim their rewards.
Once half of them had received their rewards, the other half came forward. This time, it was to receive the Deceitful Objects.
With the exception of the first-place winner, everyone else could only receive one Deceitful Object.
It might seem like the rewards were the same and that ranking didn’t matter, but that wasn’t the case.
The subsequent training and support were what was truly crucial, making the rankings just as important.
Everyone received a Deceitful Object they desired. Regardless of whether they could communicate with and use it, the object could be kept as a family heirloom.
Before long, only Shen Bai remained.
Then, under the expectant gazes of the crowd, Shen Bai stepped forward.
Feng Zheng cleared his throat and announced loudly, "Shen Bai, Ding Shou of the Fenglin State Observatory! For winning first place in this competition and for averting the cataclysmic disaster in Yunxi State, he is awarded five Deceitful Objects! Does anyone have any objections?"
Objections? Who would have any objections?
The crowd looked at one another, then shook their heads in unison.
’Objections? Even if he were given all the Deceitful Objects, no one would have a problem with it.’
’After all, his contributions were tangible and undeniable. There was nothing more to say.’
Seeing that there were no objections, Feng Zheng nodded. "Lord Shen, please inspect them carefully."
Members of the Observatory took five Deceitful Objects from the wooden chest and presented them to Shen Bai.
Shen Bai simply swiped his hand through the air. A fissure appeared, and the five Deceitful Objects were drawn into the space of his Life and Death Storage Skill.
He had used this Space Technique while Healing the Third Prince, so everyone had seen it before.
