Chapter 402 - 340: Overly Mature
A star of his caliber had always looked down on these kinds of attention-grabbing TV shows. He certainly wouldn’t use a show like this to gain exposure.
Just like Kelly, her guest appearance wasn’t because the show was a hit. She said it herself—she just wanted to personally taste Chen Yu’s cooking and see how delicious his food really was.
The woman was a total foodie.
Burnett said, "Chen, it’s precisely because he’s so hard to invite that the effect on the show will be incredible if we manage to get him. Besides, don’t you want to meet him and spend time with him up close?"
He had heard Chen Yu say that his idol was Michael Jackson.
This was perfectly normal. When Jackson was taking the world by storm, Chen Yu was a young man. There wasn’t a single young person from that era who didn’t worship Michael Jackson.
Chen Yu frowned. "What do you mean, ’spend time with him up close’? You make it sound like I’m trying to do something to him. Besides, if I really wanted to meet him, it wouldn’t be difficult at all."
With his current reputation, there would be no problem at all if he went to visit Michael Jackson directly.
Burnett gave an awkward laugh and said, "I was just saying. But it really is a very imaginative idea, and I think it’s feasible."
"Like I said, inviting him is difficult, but I know he’ll participate if it’s a show about charity. Weren’t we just discussing the theme for the next episode? I know all NBA teams have community outreach activities."
"So, could we find some kids with obesity problems, have Shaq lead them in losing weight, and make the next episode’s theme about tackling childhood obesity? You know, that’s always been a huge issue."
Chen Yu’s brow furrowed.
’Adolescents?’
Chen Yu knew that the obesity rate in the United States was rising year by year, and among adolescents, the rate was even higher.
All sorts of junk food were flooding school campuses.
And it wasn’t just the United States; it was the same all over the world.
"That’s a good theme," Chen Yu nodded thoughtfully.
The show becoming a hit and making money was one thing, but Chen Yu had no intention of becoming some kind of celebrity. He hoped his show could have some meaning beyond just being a soap opera-style reality show.
"Then it’s settled. I’ll go make a plan right now and contact MJ." Fearing Chen Yu might refuse again, Burnett eagerly got up and left.
Chen Yu didn’t even have a chance to stop him.
’That guy!’
Chen Yu shook his head slightly.
’Inviting Michael Jackson... he sure dreams big.’
’But if he can actually pull it off, it wouldn’t be a bad thing.’
Last month, when Kelly came for the shoot, Lexi was incredibly excited and kept showing off about it to him.
’This time, it’s my turn.’
The next day, Chen Yu arrived early at the sports laboratory.
The NCAA season was over, and the draft declaration deadline was approaching. Almost everyone who was going to declare for the draft had already done so. As someone within the league, Chen Yu naturally had the specific list of names.
So, excluding the international players, Chen Yu sent out invitations to all the players who had declared for the draft, inviting them to Phoenix to undergo his potential prediction analysis.
To that end, Chen Yu even offered to reimburse their travel and accommodation expenses in Phoenix.
In the end, a total of 47 people accepted the invitation.
They would be staying in Phoenix for a week.
The expenses for 47 people for a week were not insignificant.
However, Chen Yu wasn’t the one footing the bill. Nike had proactively contacted Chen Yu and enthusiastically became the title sponsor for the event.
And they weren’t the only ones vying for it.
Much of the equipment in the Chen Yu Sports Laboratory was from Johnson & Johnson, and they were also eager to sponsor the event for promotional purposes.
Then there was Eli Lilly. Ryan contacted Chen Yu immediately, saying they would sponsor the event as long as all the incoming rookies drank their Physical Fitness No.1.
Chen Yu couldn’t help but sigh. It was no wonder famous people made money so easily. Once you were famous enough, people would line up to throw money at you for just about anything you did.
The invited players had started arriving over the past two days.
At ten o’clock this morning, there was a brief opening ceremony for the camp.
Chen Yu’s long-term goal was to create a private training camp, hold it in April, and have it serve as a warm-up for the official draft combine.
This was because many top prospects, fearing injury and a drop in their draft stock, would skip the combine altogether.
The scheduled time was ten in the morning, but just after nine, LeBron James had already arrived by car.
"I’ll go in by myself." Getting out of the car with his bag, James stopped Aaron Goodwin from following him inside.
Goodwin nodded and reminded him, "LeBron, you have to be humble in front of Chen Yu. He’s not an ordinary person. His influence in the league is immense."
"Don’t worry, I get it." James nodded with a maturity beyond his years.
That was Chen Yu—the presidential medical advisor, a world-renowned miracle doctor, and the head of the league’s health and safety department. With a single word, he could decide whether you could return after an injury. Even the likes of Stern and Jordan deferred to Chen Yu. How could a rookie like him dare to act arrogant in front of Chen Yu?
With his bag on his back, James went in alone. After speaking with a staff member, he entered a massive warehouse-like space.
To James’s surprise, he thought he had arrived very early, but someone was already in the waiting area before him.
It was a tall, young white man with blond hair, sitting there quietly. He looked over at James the moment he entered.
He didn’t come over to say hello.
But James walked over with a smile. "Hi, I’m LeBron James, from Ohio. You must be Kyle Korver from Creighton University, right? I know who you are."
He was slightly taller and more solidly built than Korver, but when he shook his hand and spoke, he deliberately lowered his head, his attitude exceedingly humble.
Korver quickly responded.
Of course, he knew about the superstar prospect James. The media had already discussed it a hundred times, claiming James was the guaranteed number one pick in this year’s draft.
How could Korver not know about such a top prospect?
He just didn’t expect James to actually know his name. He was well aware that because he came from a lesser-known university, was white, and had average athleticism, he had received almost no attention after declaring for the draft. The media even predicted he might go undrafted.
And yet, a person like James was being so polite to someone like him, without a hint of the arrogance that often came with looking down on everyone else.
’He’s certainly earned the right to be arrogant!’
James sat down next to Korver and started a conversation while taking in the entire sports laboratory.
A few minutes later, another player arrived.
’Good thing I came early,’ James was secretly relieved. He had wanted to leave a diligent and punctual impression on Chen Yu, but he never expected that all these rookies were just as diligent and had all shown up early.
With that thought, James immediately stood up and went to greet him.
"Hello, I’m LeBron James. You must be Brandon Hunter, right? We’re both from Ohio. I know you’re the star player for Ohio State University."
Brandon Hunter shook James’s hand, a look of bewilderment on his face.
Meanwhile, in a room in the office area, Chen Yu and Nelson’s team were observing the people in the waiting area.
The evaluation had, in fact, already begun.
Chen Yu glanced at his watch. There were still nearly forty minutes until the scheduled ten o’clock start, yet 12 people had already arrived.
Just then, Nelson, who was beside him, said, "Chen, at first I thought that since James is a high schooler, he might be a bit too immature psychologically, but from the looks of it now, he seems quite mature."
The problem of immaturity among high school draftees was becoming increasingly apparent.
The most famous example, of course, was Kwame Brown.
Not long ago, his struggles with depression were exposed by a big-mouthed teammate, sparking some media reports and attention.
In comparison, James, also a high schooler, appeared much more mature.
The key was that he also looked mature, not at all like a high school student.
Chen Yu looked up at the surveillance monitor.
Another person arrived, and James immediately stood up, introduced himself, and even said the other person’s name.
After a moment of thought, Chen Yu said, "Actually, I think he’s *too* mature."
A high school student who isn’t even 19 yet is, to put it bluntly, still just a kid.
But this "kid" could name every other rookie in his class, knew where they were from, and which university they attended.
That can’t be described as just mature; it’s worldly and polished.
Chen Yu figured he must have memorized all the players’ information in advance and come prepared.
