[From: Secretariat of the Board of Directors, Great Lakes Environmental Justice Association]
[Recipients: All current employees and unpaid interns]
[CC: All Board Members and Advisors of the Association, Michigan State Environmental Registry, Partner Organizations (General Motors Government and Public Utilities Division, Ford —)]
[Subject: Announcement of the Appointment of the New Executive Director of the Great Lakes Environmental Justice Association]
Dear colleagues and partners:
Based on the Association's Bylaws and the Michigan Nonprofit Organization Governance Guidelines, and following formal review and voting by all current board members of the Great Lakes Environmental Justice Association, —
Mr. Bane Cole is hereby appointed, effective immediately upon sending this email, as Executive Director of the Great Lakes Environmental Justice Association, responsible for the Association's daily operations.
Special announcement.
Great Lakes Environmental Justice Association Board of Directors, April 3, 2009. [Note: This appointment resolution is filed in the Association's statutory board archives and is subject to verification by tax and environmental regulatory authorities and partner organizations; it has legal effect.]
Inside the HR Director's office.
Linda, who had previously been responsible for firing Bane, rubbed her eyes in disbelief, repeatedly checking the name on the email.
"Bane Cole?"
Why him?
"How could it be him?"
A wave of unease washed over Linda, and she felt like she was doomed.
Logically speaking, as the HR director, her dismissal of Bane was simply following orders from her superiors and was within her duties; there was really nothing wrong with it.
However, she did not actually follow the prescribed procedures.
According to regulations, she should have notified Clarissa first, and only after Clarissa had negotiated and confirmed with the higher-ups could she proceed with the dismissal.
But at that time she was only focused on pleasing Howard and didn't think Bane was a character worth caring about.
So she bypassed Clarissa and acted first and asked questions later.
Now, Howard has been arrested, and her boss is someone she previously fired.
Wasn't this joke a bit too far?
"It's over!"
"This is really the end."
"Given Detroit's current employment rate, if I lose my job, will I be able to find another one?"
As she murmured to herself, Linda couldn't help but recall the scene when she fired Bane that day.
"I regret to inform you, Mr. Cole, that you have been laid off."
"I must explain to you that, except for Montana, all other places in the United States use the 'any employment' system by default. Our association is no exception."
"Under the principle of arbitrary employment, employers have the right to dismiss employees at any time without incurring any compensation costs."
Each sentence.
It was like a series of boomerangs hitting her face, making Linda dizzy.
She felt she would soon hear the same thing again.
The difference is that the protagonist has become herself.
However, not everyone felt like the end of the world was coming, just like her.
Most employees had no prior interaction with Bane, so there was no conflict between them.
At this moment, they were more surprised and astonished.
"A generous gift of crab!"
"Bane?"
"It's Bane?"
"My God, this is too unbelievable! A project assistant who was fired has now become an executive director?"
"Keep your voice down, do you want to get fired?"
"No, no, I was just lamenting that if I had been suddenly laid off, I would probably still be searching for a job all over the place right now."
"How did he manage that? How did he manage to get the board to cooperate?"
The association's staff discussed it enthusiastically, and the senior advisors associated with the association also gradually took notice of the news.
Who is Bane Cole?
"How come I've never heard of you before? Did you switch from another association?"
"Wait a minute, 22 years old? Has the association's board of directors gone mad, hiring someone this young to manage the association?"
"Your youth is secondary. Why not make Clarissa the executive director? She's an environmental celebrity, after all."
All sorts of thoughts arise in the minds of different people.
However, Bane, sitting in his office at the moment, had no time to pay attention to what these people were thinking, because he was submitting his assignment.
[Task submitted in progress————]
[Mission Objective: Promote your rank within the Great Lakes Environmental Justice Association]
[Task Completion Rating: S (Beginner Difficulty)]
[Mission Reward: 2400 Chaos Reputation Points + 5 Item Card Repurchase Opportunities]
[Long-term task initiated: From now on, please initiate issues yourself (not limited to NG0 type). For each issue executed, you can actively submit it to the system for "effectiveness rating".]
The system will distribute rewards based on the rating results.
Looking at the system's notification about the [long-term mission], Bane couldn't help but scratch his chin.
In other words, you'll have to figure out how to cause trouble first, then submit your actions to the system for evaluation before you can get a reward.
The degree of freedom has increased considerably.
Also, the rating for this rank promotion mission is [S-rank (beginner difficulty)]. Does that mean there will be [normal difficulty], [elite difficulty], etc. in the future?
Besides, what does "item card repurchase opportunity x5" mean?
Can I repurchase the item cards I won in previous draws?
That's good news. For example, that [Push Stream Card] is a powerful and easy-to-use weapon for me.
With this thing, if I want to make some noise secretly, no one will find out. After all, other people need a team to promote their products, but I don't.
After pondering for a while, Bane opened the system panel again.
[Current Chaos Reputation: 2400 (newly added) + 100 (existing)]
"2500—" Staring at the chaotic reputation value, Bane was preparing to study how to allocate the points when there was a knock on the office door.
Clarissa poked her head in and said, "Ford's donors have arrived; they're in the conference room."
"Did they say anything?" Bane put away the panel, got up and walked outside.
"They say our association changes every day, with too many changes at the top, and the previous cooperation may not be able to continue." Clarissa looked like she had already guessed it.
After saying that, she whispered, "When you exposed the negative aspects of the scrap metal factory before, you should have included them as well."
"You can't bring it. Ford and GM are in different situations. Although Ford is also facing many problems, it is generally stable. News about these scrap plants is unlikely to really affect them."
"Bringing them along would not only be ineffective, but would likely also encourage Ford and GM to unite and put pressure on us, which would be counterproductive," Bane explained.
After explaining, he asked, "How many people came? What's the leader's name?"
"Three, two men and one woman. The one leading them is that woman, Denise Firestone. She didn't come last time," Clarissa quickly introduced.
However, upon hearing the name, Bane paused in his tracks: "Firestone?"
"Yes." Clarissa nodded.
She seemed to guess what Bane was thinking and took the initiative to introduce him: "It's Firestone, the former second-largest tire manufacturer in the United States after Goodyear, and Ford's old partner."
"If I remember correctly, Firestone was acquired by Bridgestone of Japan in 88, right?" Bane was planning to target Ford and GM, so he naturally knew a lot about the two companies.
"I don't know if it was 88, but it was indeed acquired, and the Firestone family left the company." Clarissa nodded.
After saying that, she added, "Why do you think Denise works at Ford? Ford's current tire supplier is Bridgestone, which they acquired. Doesn't that make you uncomfortable?"
"I don't know," Bane shrugged.
As they spoke, the two arrived at the door of the conference room.
As soon as Bane opened the door, his gaze fell on Denise, who was wearing a black and gray business suit.
Her small face was half-hidden by large black-rimmed glasses, and her golden flaxen hair was tied in a simple ponytail. She looked like the kind of bookworm in an American TV show who was always ready to transform into a beauty.
wrong.
How old is this girl?
Are you an adult?
Why does it look like a small figurine?
Bane had a lot of ideas running through his mind, but he didn't show any impoliteness. He started exchanging business pleasantries with Denise, as Clarissa introduced them.
This polite remark only made Bane and Clarissa more puzzled.
Because Denise's manner of speaking was also like that of a bookworm, her speech was rigid and somewhat wooden.
The two men didn't understand why Ford had arranged for this particular person to discuss matters.
However, they quickly understood.
Because Denise is completely impervious to reason.
No matter how eloquently Bane spoke, she always watched with that blank expression, never interrupting, never asking questions, and never giving any feedback.
Each time, she would quietly wait for Bane to finish speaking.
Then, sincerely add: "I'm sorry, given your association's current situation and the potential legal risks Howard may pose, we are truly unable to continue fulfilling the donation agreement."
You can't even bring yourself to criticize this kind of person, because she's not denying you; she just doesn't understand.
She might understand, but she acted as if she didn't.
Powerless.
I feel utterly powerless.
One hour later————
Bane, questioning the meaning of life, reluctantly signed his name on the agreement to suspend the donation.
Then, watching Denise, who looked like a figurine, leave with her entourage.
As for Clarissa, she had been holding it in for a long time, and the moment Denise's figure disappeared from sight, she burst into laughter.
"This is hilarious, hahaha!"
"Damn it, this is the first time I've ever seen someone make you completely speechless, hahahahaha————"
Clarissa laughed louder and louder, even leaning on Bane's shoulder.
Bane was amused and tormented. He fiddled with Denise's business card and said, "Do you think she's pretending to be stupid, or is she really stupid?"
'
"It doesn't look like she's faking it," Clarissa shook her head.
"I think she's faking it. I refuse to believe it. I'm determined to get a donation from her!"
